STEVE SPACEK WAKE UP FEEL GOOD
Steve Spacek (Steve White) has released music that pushes boundaries since the 90s. He and two others formed the band Spacek in '96, which carved an innovative kind of electronic soul music. Whilst, he has worked with big names like J Dilla and Thundercat, Spacek's most recent works are under Black Pocket project. The freshest album is ALAYLY, which is minimally satisfying, soulful and refreshing. ‘Wake Up Feel Good’ is made up of a simple bass drum, finger clicks and vocals. A low, repetitive vocal melody acts as the bass line, alongside parallel harmonies singing "Wake up in the morning and I feel so good". The song gradually becomes thicker, with more vocals layered on top, some acting percussively, as well as samples of what sounds like clinking glass. The top vocal is passionate and fluid like melting chocolate. The experimental and exhilarating nature of this tune (and the whole album) really places Steve Spacek’s work somewhere very original and genre-defiant. -Ellie Rose-Davies
